Aquatics

Aquatic Therapy uses the special properties of water to help you move more freely during exercise. Aquatic Therapy progresses from light to moderate activity to increasingly more difficult exercises as you become stronger.

What are the benefits of Aquatic Therapy?

  • Provides smooth, even resistance to the body while holding an upright position
  • Decreases pain and discomfort
  • Improves stability and balance
  • Creates less stress on the joints
  • Lessens the effects of gravity for safe, effective exercise
  • Offers relaxation!

Who can benefit from Aquatic Therapy?

Aquatic Therapy is helpful for:

  • Back/neck pain
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Decreased strength
  • Decreased endurance
  • Arthritis
  • Chronic pain
  • Decreased flexibility or mobility
  • Poor balance and coordination
  • Decreased control of posture
  • Decreased heart health

What should I expect?

You will have an evaluation by a Physical Therapist. The therapist will examine your posture, balance, range of motion, strength, flexibility and walking. The therapist will then schedule your therapy sessions. Generally, you will participate in therapy 2-3 times per week for 4-6 weeks. Your progress will be discussed with you and reported to your doctor on a regular basis.

Will I need to swim?

No! The pool where you will be doing most of your therapy is shallow. You may use deeper water, but only with devices to help you float. There will also be a therapist in the pool with you at all times.

How do I get started?

A referral from your doctor is needed. Your doctor’s office can contact us to schedule an evaluation with one of our therapists.

Will my insurance cover Aquatic Therapy?

Most insurance plans, including Medicare, cover the cost of Aquatic Therapy. We will contact your insurance company to determine allowable benefits. At your first visit, we will discuss coverage with you.
