Topic-Description: As rehab professionals, PTs/PTAs and OTs/COTAs are experts taking a diagnosis and effectively treating with evidence-informed practice. When comorbidities such as anxiety and depression are present, rehabilitation outcomes can be significantly affected and rehab professionals may not possess the tools to effectively overcome these barriers in the clinical setting. This course explores the prevalence of anxiety and depression in the rehab setting and examines the bidirectional relationship of these with pain. Learners will learn how psychological factors influence the course of care and therapeutic alliance. A focus on whole-person care and patient-centered strategies will be discussed.

Topic-Description: Recent evidence demonstrates that both the external and internal biases of healthcare providers affect patient outcomes and experiences in the rehab setting. While body weight may correlate with many disease processes, correlation is NOT causation. We are seeing an increase in patients turning to GLP-1 medications to assist with managing their weight. Compared to 2018, there has been a 155% increase in prescriptions for GLP-1 medications. It is estimated that 1 in 8 Americans are taking or have taken these medications, making it imperative that rehab professionals understand their impact on a patient’s plan of care and outcomes. Learners will explore what anti-fat bias is and reflect how their chosen approach to care may negatively impact the patient. Practical strategies to improve the therapeutic alliance will be explored. An overview of GLP-1 medications and their effects on body systems will be discussed as well as considerations to strengthening programs when a patient is on this medication type.
